Ion Exchange Fundamentals

Ion exchange resins are polymer beads with charged functional groups that attract and hold ions from solution, releasing counterions in exchange. Cation resins remove positively charged ions (calcium, magnesium, sodium, heavy metals). Anion resins remove negatively charged ions (nitrate, sulfate, chloride, bicarbonate, silica). Mixed bed systems combine both in a single vessel for high-purity applications.

Selection Guidance

Resin selection depends on target ions, competing ions in the feed water, required effluent quality, regenerant availability, and operating temperature. For complex applications — particularly PFAS, perchlorate, or uranium removal — our technical team will conduct a bench-scale resin screening before recommending a specific Eaglesorb product for your application.
