When to Replace Filter Media

Unlike cartridges, which have a fixed volume and monthly replacement schedule, bulk filter media in tanks can last for years — sometimes decades — before needing replacement. The right replacement interval depends on your media type, water quality, and daily water use.

General guidelines: GAC and KDF media in whole-house tanks typically need replacement every 5–10 years. Katalox Light lasts 10–15 years. Calcite in acid neutralizers is consumed over time and should be topped off annually. Ion exchange resins (DI, nitrate, softener) are exhausted and regenerated or replaced on a schedule based on capacity.
