RO Membrane Replacement — What You Need to Know

The RO membrane is the heart of any reverse osmosis system. It's a semi-permeable film that rejects dissolved contaminants under pressure — but over time, dissolved solids accumulate on the membrane surface, reducing rejection rate and water production. Most residential membranes should be replaced every 2–3 years.

Signs your membrane needs replacement: significantly reduced water production, water waste ratio increasing, TDS of product water rising above 50 ppm (test with a TDS meter). Membrane life varies based on water quality, pressure, and pre-filtration. Always ensure your sediment and carbon pre-filters are replaced on schedule to protect membrane life.
